Zen (禅) is the first of all a practice that was continuously delivered from master to disciple, and that goes back to the spiritual Enlightenment of a man named Siddhārtha Gautama (Shakyamuni Gotama in Japanese) - The Buddha - 2500 years ago in India. Zen Buddhism is a practice that needs to be experienced, not a concept that you can understand with your brain, but it's only your mind. It's like trying to describe the taste of honey to someone who has never tasted it before.

Zazen (座禅 -za meaning sitting, and zen meaning meditation in Japanese) is a practice of Zen meditation. Zen is the core of Zen Buddhism, if without it, there is no Zen. Zen meditation, is a way of vigilance and self-discovery which is practiced while sitting on a meditation cushion. Zazen refers to sitting meditation which is a practice about 'give insight into your true nature of being'.

Zen is the experience of living from moment to moment, in the here and now through the practice of Zazen that Gautama got enlightened and became the Buddha. Zazen is a meditation as the means to awakening. For Meditation in Buddhism have two main approaches are used, śamatha (Concentration of the mind) and vipaśyanā (Deep insight training). Zen Buddhism emphasizes samātha. Zazen is an attitude of spiritual awakening, which when practiced, can become the source from which all the actions of daily life flow, such as breathing, talking, walking, thinking, working, sleeping, etc.

In Buddhist philosophy, the ultimate benefit of meditation is liberation of the mind from attachment to things it cannot control, such as external circumstances or strong internal emotions. The liberated or “enlightened” practitioner no longer needlessly follows desires or clings to experiences, but instead maintains a calm mind and sense of inner harmony.

Zazen originates from the teachings of Buddha, who lived in India 2,500 years ago and founded the religion and philosophy of Buddhism. Zen meditation ideally is not only concentration, but also awareness: being aware of the continuing changes in our consciousness, of all our sensations and our automatic reactions.
